Our Lady of Perpetual Yelp
"Our Lady of Perpetual Yelp" is an ongoing food altar installation practice that explores the relationship between hospitality, religiosity and the impact of self-published, personal narratives found on the restaurant review website Yelp.
The internet provides an anonymous space for many to voice their opinions, both good and bad. As a hospitality worker for majority of my life, I have been at the mercy of "food influencers" and "elite Yelpers". In both circumstances, a hierarchy and subsequently an unhealthy class system manifests itself when catering to individuals from either of these realms. This project is a critical meditation, using the format of catholic altars, personal objects and talismans and a rotating food menu, in order to investigate anxieties and stresses active in the hospitality industry.
